Britain might not lead the world when it comes to football but we score highly when it comes to our bars, clubs and pubs. The judges in this year’s Restaurant & Bar Design Awards had the unenviable task of choosing from nearly 400 entries scattered over 38 countries. Many of the shortlisted venues from across the UK would have made credible winners, emphasising how Britain is a world leader in design.
The shortlist and eventual winners prove the best designs are not restricted to London (and why should they be?). Bars and clubs in towns and cities such as Glasgow, Bristol, Bath, Liverpool and Sheffield were up for awards, while winners came from Edinburgh, Dorset and Newcastle – where theCUT by Julian Taylor Design Associates would not look out of place in New York or other world cities. In this issue, we profile the winners and also look at the latest in lighting design and what creates the so-called “wow factor” in hospitality interiors.
Our report on liqueurs looks at how the category is being shaken up by not just cocktail bartenders but a growing interest in the ingredients of food and drink. Long-established liqueurs are being reassessed while exciting new ones are coming onto the UK market. Similarly, we find out that innovation is helping to tackle declines in beer in the on-trade.
